Proverbs 8

The Commendation of Wisdom

8 Does not ^(A)wisdom call,
And understanding ^[a]raise her voice?
²On top of ^(B)the heights beside the way,
Where the paths meet, she takes her stand;
³Beside the ^(C)gates, at the opening to the city,
At the entrance of the doors, she cries out:
⁴“To you, people, I call,
And my voice is to ^[b]mankind.
⁵You ^(D)naive ones, understand prudence;
And, you ^(E)fools, understand ^[c]wisdom!
⁶Listen, for I will speak ^(F)noble things;
And the opening of my lips will reveal ^(G)right things.
⁷For my ^(H)mouth will proclaim truth;
And wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
⁸All the words of my mouth are in righteousness;
There is nothing ^(I)crooked or perverted in them.
⁹They are all ^(J)straightforward to him who understands,
And right to those who ^(K)find knowledge.
¹⁰Accept my ^(L)instruction and not silver,
And knowledge rather than choice gold.
¹¹For wisdom is ^(M)better than ^[d]jewels;
And ^(N)all desirable things cannot compare with her.

¹²“I, wisdom, ^(O)dwell with prudence,
And I find ^(P)knowledge and discretion.
¹³The ^(Q)fear of the Lord is to hate evil;
^(R)Pride, arrogance, ^(S)the evil way,
And the ^(T)perverted mouth, I hate.
¹⁴^(U)Advice is mine and ^(V)sound wisdom;
I am understanding, ^(W)power is mine.
¹⁵By me ^(X)kings reign,
And rulers decree justice.
¹⁶By me princes rule, and nobles,
All who judge rightly.
¹⁷I ^(Y)love those who love me;
And ^(Z)those who diligently seek me will find me.
¹⁸^(AA)Riches and honor are with me,
Enduring ^(AB)wealth and righteousness.
¹⁹My fruit is ^(AC)better than gold, even pure gold;
And my yield better than ^(AD)choice silver.
²⁰I walk in the way of righteousness,
In the midst of the paths of justice,
²¹To endow those who love me with wealth,
That I may ^(AE)fill their treasuries.

²²“The Lord ^[e]created me ^(AF)at the beginning of His way,
Before His works ^[f]of old.
²³From eternity I was ^[g]^(AG)established,
From the beginning, ^(AH)from the earliest times of the earth.
²⁴When there were no ^(AI)ocean depths, I was born,
When there were no springs abounding with water.
²⁵^(AJ)Before the mountains were settled,
Before the hills, I was born;
²⁶While He had not yet made the earth and the ^[h]fields,
Nor the first dust of the world.
²⁷When He ^(AK)established the heavens, I was there;
When ^(AL)He inscribed a circle on the face of the deep,
²⁸When He made firm the skies above,
When the springs of the deep became ^[i]fixed,
²⁹When ^(AM)He set a boundary for the sea
So that the water would not violate His ^[j]command,
When He marked out ^(AN)the foundations of the earth;
³⁰Then ^(AO)I was beside Him, as a master workman;
And I was His delight daily,
^[k]Rejoicing always before Him,
³¹^[l]Rejoicing in the world, His earth,
And having ^(AP)my delight in the sons of mankind.

³²“Now then, sons, ^(AQ)listen to me,
For ^(AR)blessed are those who keep my ways.
³³^(AS)Listen to instruction and be wise,
And do not neglect it.
³⁴^(AT)Blessed is the person who listens to me,
Watching daily at my gates,
Waiting at my doorposts.
³⁵For ^(AU)one who finds me finds life,
And ^(AV)obtains favor from the Lord.
³⁶But one who ^[m]sins against me ^(AW)injures himself;
All those who ^(AX)hate me ^(AY)love death.”

Walk According to His Commandments

¹^(A)The elder to the ^(B)chosen ^(C)lady and her children, whom I ^(D)love in truth; and not only I, but also all who ^(E)know the truth, ²^(F)because of the truth which remains ^(G)in us and will be ^(H)with us forever: ³^(I)Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

⁴^(J)I was overjoyed to find some of your children walking in truth, just as we have received a commandment to do from the Father. ⁵Now I ask you, lady, ^(K)not as though I were writing to you a new commandment, but the one which we have had ^(L)from the beginning, that we ^(M)love one another. ⁶And ^(N)this is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, ^(O)just as you have heard ^(P)from the beginning, that you are to walk in it.

⁷For ^(Q)many deceivers have ^(R)gone out into the world, those who ^(S)do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is ^(T)the deceiver and the ^(U)antichrist. ⁸^(V)Watch yourselves, ^(W)that you do not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward. ⁹^[a]Anyone who ^[b]goes too far and ^(X)does not remain in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who remains in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. ¹⁰If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, ^(Y)do not receive him into your house, and do not ^[c]give him a greeting; ¹¹for the one who ^[d]gives him a greeting ^[e]^(Z)participates in his evil deeds.

¹²^(AA)Though I have many things to write to you, I do not want to do so with paper and ink; but I hope to come to you and speak ^[f]face to face, so that ^[g]your ^(AB)joy may be made complete.

¹³The children of your ^(AC)chosen sister greet you.

Contrast of the Righteous and the Wicked

10 The ^(A)proverbs of Solomon.

^(B)A wise son makes a father glad,
But ^(C)a foolish son is a grief to his mother.
²^[a]^(D)Ill-gotten gains do not benefit,
But righteousness rescues from death.
³The Lord ^(E)will not allow the ^[b]righteous to hunger,
But He ^(F)will ^[c]reject the craving of the wicked.
⁴Poor is one who works with ^[d]a lazy hand,
But the ^(G)hand of the diligent makes rich.
⁵He who gathers in summer is a son who acts wisely,
But he who sleeps in harvest is a son who acts shamefully.
⁶^(H)Blessings are on the head of the righteous,
But ^(I)the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
⁷The ^(J)mentioning of the righteous is a blessing,
But ^(K)the name of the wicked will rot.
⁸The ^(L)wise of heart will receive commands,
But ^[e]a babbling fool will come to ruin.
⁹One ^(M)who walks in integrity walks securely,
But ^(N)one who perverts his ways will be found out.
¹⁰He ^(O)who winks the eye causes trouble,
And ^[f]^(P)a babbling fool will come to ruin.
¹¹The ^(Q)mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life,
But ^(R)the mouth of the wicked conceals violence.
¹²Hatred stirs up strife,
But ^(S)love covers all offenses.
¹³On ^(T)the lips of the discerning, wisdom is found,
But ^(U)a rod is for the back of him who has no ^[g]sense.
¹⁴Wise people ^(V)store up knowledge,
But with ^(W)the mouth of the foolish, ruin is at hand.
¹⁵The ^(X)rich person’s wealth is his ^[h]fortress,
The ^(Y)ruin of the poor is their poverty.
¹⁶The ^[i]^(Z)wages of the righteous is life,
The income of the wicked, punishment.
¹⁷One who ^(AA)is on the path of life follows instruction,
But one who ignores a rebuke goes astray.
¹⁸One ^(AB)who conceals hatred has lying lips,
And one who spreads slander is a fool.
¹⁹When there are ^(AC)many words, wrongdoing is unavoidable,
But ^(AD)one who restrains his lips is wise.
²⁰The tongue of the righteous is like ^(AE)choice silver,
The heart of the wicked is worth little.
²¹The ^(AF)lips of the righteous feed many,
But fools ^(AG)die for lack of ^[j]understanding.
²²It is the ^(AH)blessing of the Lord that makes rich,
And He adds no sorrow to it.

Death Plot and Anointing

14 ^(A)Now ^(B)the Passover and Festival of Unleavened Bread were two days away; and the chief priests and the scribes ^(C)were seeking how to arrest Him covertly and kill Him; ²for they were saying, “Not during the festival, otherwise there will be a riot of the people.”

³^(D)While He was in ^(E)Bethany at the home of Simon ^[a]the Leper, He was reclining at the table, and a woman came with an alabaster vial of very ^(F)expensive perfume of pure ^[b]nard. She broke the vial and poured the perfume over His head. ⁴But there were some indignantly remarking to one another, “Why has this perfume been wasted? ⁵For this perfume could have been sold for over three hundred ^[c]denarii, and the money given to the poor.” And they were scolding her. ⁶But Jesus said, “Leave her alone! Why are you bothering her? She has done a good deed for Me. ⁷For you always have ^(G)the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good to them; but you do not always have Me. ⁸She has done what she could; ^(H)she has anointed My body beforehand for the burial. ⁹Truly I say to you, ^(I)wherever the gospel is preached in the entire world, what this woman has done will also be told in memory of her.”

¹⁰^(J)Then Judas Iscariot, ^(K)who was one of the twelve, went off to the chief priests in order to ^[d]betray Him to them. ¹¹They were delighted when they heard this, and promised to give him money. And he began seeking how to betray Him at an opportune time.

The Last Passover

¹²^(L)On the first day of ^[e]^(M)Unleavened Bread, when ^[f]the Passover lamb was being ^(N)sacrificed, His disciples *said to Him, “Where do You want us to go and prepare for You to eat the Passover?” ¹³And He *sent two of His disciples and *said to them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you; follow him; ¹⁴and wherever he enters, say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says, “Where is My ^(O)guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ ¹⁵And he himself will show you a large upstairs room furnished and ready; prepare for us there.” ¹⁶The disciples left and came to the city, and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.

¹⁷^(P)When it was evening He *came with the twelve. ¹⁸And as they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly I say to you that one of you will ^[g]betray Me—^[h]one who is eating with Me.” ¹⁹They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, “Surely not I?” ²⁰But He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, the one who dips bread with Me in the bowl. ²¹For the Son of Man is going away just as it is written about Him; but woe to that man ^[i]by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good ^[j]for that man if he had not been born.”

The Lord’s Supper

²²^(Q)While they were eating, He took some bread, and ^[k]after a ^(R)blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is My body.” ²³And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. ²⁴And He said to them, “This is My ^(S)blood of the ^(T)covenant, which is being poured out for many. ²⁵Truly I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine again, until that day when I drink it, new, in the kingdom of God.”
